14:00 - 15:00 - 'A great curse' or 'a notable role'? Hiroshima, Nagasaki and the bomb in the Yishuv's perspective, Or (Ori) Rabinowitz-Batz, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Abstract:

Israel's covert nuclear program and its role in US-Israeli relations has been at the heart of an extensive academic exploration in the past two decades. While academic attention has been focused on Israel's nuclear progress in the 1960s and the 1970s, and the development of its policy of nuclear ambiguity, little attention had been given to its early roots, or more specifically, to how the Zionist leadership and the Yishuv, the Jewish community of British controlled Palestine, saw and perceived the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

 

This study will explore how the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the consequent public unveiling of the Manhattan project, were perceived by the Zionist movement by examining the Yishuv press, and the reactions of its two most prominent leaders, Chaim Weitzman and David Ben Gurion. The study will outline Weizmann's failed attempt to use the participation of Jewish scientists in the Manhattan project as a leverage of sort, aimed at pressuring the British to allow the immigration of Holocaust surviving Jews from Europe to Palestine. The study will also explore Weizmann's initial interest in 'atomic energy' and nuclear reactor technology for the Yishuv, in the pre-1948 period. Ben Gurion's reaction will be analyzed as well, though this analysis is shorter, due to the limited range of the reaction itself.

16:00 - 17:00 - Probing the Gluon Distribution at Low x in p-Pb Collisions with Forward Dijet Measurements in ATLAS, Matthias Grosse Perdekamp, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Abstract:

ATLAS has measured the production of dijets in proton-led nucleus collisions at small scattering angles with respect to the proton beam. This measurement probes for saturation effects in the gluon distribution at small x-Bjorken. The talk will review existing experimental information on the gluon distribution in nucleons and nuclei, introduce measurements of forward di-jets as a probe of nuclear parton structure at the lowest x possible and present the latest ATLAS di-jet measurement in p-Pb.
