Abstract:

Particle detectors are used by physicists to discover and study the fundamental constituents of matter. The technological progress was driven by the scientific curiosity, to resolve smaller and smaller structures or to search for new particles.

A recent remarkable achievement was the discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN by the ATLAS and CMS experiments.

An overview will be given on the major detection mechanisms and their use in recent developments for experiments in Particle Physics.

Several of these technologies have found applications in space research, medicine and material sciences. Examples of these spin-offs will be discussed.
