Abstract:

Recent developments in quantum metrology have inspired a growing interest in developing techniques that manipulate free electrons and light to enhance the performance of various applications of imaging and microscopy and attain their ultimate quantum limits. In the first part of the talk, I will present a quantum-inspired technique to enhance the sensitivity and throughput of imaging a dynamic sample that approaches the quantum limit, surpassing sensitivity enhancement of all previous demonstrations of imaging that use squeezed light or entanglement. The second part will focus on free electrons, where I will describe two techniques for manipulating free electrons in the context of quantum imaging. The first technique allows for manipulating the transverse wavefunction of free electrons using thin photovoltaic membranes illuminated with patterned continuous wave light. The second is the quantum-inspired technique from the first part of the talk, used to enhance the dose efficiency in electron microscopy of delicate samples, such as imaging single molecules at atomic resolution. Then, I will show that this technique also approaches the quantum limit of dose efficient phase contrast electron microscopy. Finally, I will give an outlook for experiments in my new lab at TAU on quantum electron optics using a low-energy electron microscope (LEEM).
