Geography Department Seminar

Abstract:

The Mediterranean has been recognized as a ‘hot spot’, currently influenced by climate change, and predicted to be strongly affected in the future by significant warming and drying. This trend is expected to be expressed in changes of Mediterranean circulation in general, and of Eastern Mediterranean (EM) weather regimes characteristics in particular.

An overview of recent studies attempting to reduce uncertainty in climate predictions will be discussed: 1) An investigation of future changes in the occurrence of EM synoptic systems, with an emphasis on cyclones. 2) 21st century projections of the seasons' length, defined according to the prevailing synoptic systems. 3) Projections of EM extreme precipitation indices based on 23 Global Climate Models. 4) A first very high resolution (~8km) simulation of extreme temperature and precipitation over Israel.
