Abstract:

It is generally thought that  `statistical independence' must be an inevitable feature of theories for elementary particles, and that it is herewith proven that quantum mechanics is incompatible with determinism.

However, one can argue by starting at the other end: construct models that demonstrate the opposite, which can subsequently be analysed to see how the earlier dogmatic arguments fail.

We describe  how discretised deterministic systems restrict the allowed states of the universe to in a subspace of Hilbert space that indeed violates statistical independence, in a completely natural way.

This raises interesting questions: how can such features be built in presently understood theories for elementary particles such as the Standard Model, leading to a picture of our universe as a classical cellular automaton. How can Special and General Relativity be built in?
