Joint Seminar in Nuclear Physics

PROGRAM

14:30 - 14:45  Refreshments

14:45 - 15:45  "Quark Matter highlights", Alexander Milov, WIS

Abstract:

We will show and discuss selected highlights from the new experimental results presented at the XXVIIth International conference on Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion interaction (QM2018) conference that ended last week. The new results were shown in the measurement of particle correlations, hard probes, small systems and new facilities. Some findings make us reassess already known facts from the new point of view.

15:45 - 16:15  Coffee Break

16:15 - 17:15  "Electroweak probes in heavy ion interactions with ATLA", Mirta Dumancic, WIS

Abstract:

Electroweak probes in heavy ion interactions with ATLAS Electroweak bosons produced in collisions of heavy ions provide an excellent tool to measure the initial stage of the heavy ion interaction.

By measuring yields and distributions of the massive electroweak (EW) bosons via their leptonic decays and isolated prompt photons, we can assess the parton distribution functions and test their modifications in the nuclear environment compared to the ones of the free nucleon. Production rates of EW bosons is an opportunity to test our understanding of the collision geometry. EW probes serve as a standard candle for the calibrated measure of the jet energy loss in the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma created in collisions of heavy ions. The ATLAS experiment at the LHC collected a high-statistics data sample in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 8.16 TeV. This talk will cover the most recent results and future perspectives for measuring the above-mentioned signatures and comparisons of results with various theoretical models.
