Biological & Soft Matter Seminar: From insect motion and locomotion to bio-inspired technological innovations

Abstract:

Insects exhibit an extraordinary diversity of structures, materials, and mechanisms, making them a major source of inspiration for technological innovation. I will briefly present past and ongoing projects in our lab related to insect-inspired innovations, before focusing on a key research direction: using locusts as a model system to study collective motion and the visual interactions underlying swarming. I will summarize current knowledge, highlight major gaps, outline future perspectives, and discuss the prospects for swarm robotics.
