Abstract:

Even in the era of modern integral-field spectrographs, the Fabry-Perot interferometer provides a unique combination of high throughput, large field of view, and detailed image sampling that is important to study the ionized gas in nearby galaxies. In this talk I briefly review the operation principles of a new tunable-filter photometer developed for the 1-m telescope of the SAO RAS and the 2.5-m telescope of the Moscow State University: MaNGaL (MApper of Narrow GAlaxy Lines). The instrument is based on the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer operating in the spectral range of 460-800 nm with a typical resolution of ~1.3 nm. MaNGaL allows one to create images of galactic and extragalactic nebulae in the emission lines having different excitation conditions and to carry out diagnostics of the gas ionization state with a very accurate subtraction of underlying stellar continuum. I present an overview of the results recently obtained with MaNGaL: the 3D structure of the Milky Way HII regions, mapping of galactic outflows and ionization cones near active galactic nuclei, investigation of gas ionization in lenticular and interacting galaxies, search for nebulae associated with massive stars, etc.
