July 2020: UC Berkeley-TAU joint COVID-19 online seminar

On July 7 the Koret-Berkeley-Tel Aviv-Initiative in Computational Biology (KBT) hosted two online seminars on studies of COVID-19.

This was part of the joint seminar series between the Center of Computational Biology at UC Berkeley and the Edmond J. Safra Center for Bioinformatics at TAU.

The event took place at 8pm Tel Aviv time (10am Berkeley time) so that participants from both institutes could attend. Prof. Ron Shamir, head of Edmond J. Safra Center, opened the webinar and presented the KBT Initiative briefly.  Prof. Steven Brenner, head of the Center of Computational Biology at UC Berkeley, introduced the first speaker, Dr. Adi Stern, Edmond J. Safra member (Life Sciences). In her exciting talk titled "Full genome viral sequences inform patterns of SARS-CoV-2 spread into and within Israel", Dr. Stern presented her new study about tracing the spread of the pandemic in Israel.

Prof. Shamir presented the second speaker, Prof. Joseph Lewnard, School of Public Health and Center for Computational Biology, UC Berkeley. In his engaging talk titled "Transmission dynamics of COVID-19: observations from the United States and India". Prof. Lewnard highlighted differences between the threat posed by COVID-19 to public health and healthcare systems in high-income countries and in two states in South India.

The zoom event was attended by about 80 participants from TAU, UCB and elsewhere. Each talk was followed by a brief lively Q&A.
