November 2019: Shomron's lab art featured in Nature
Prof. Noam Shomron, Edmond J. Safra member (Medicine), was interviewed in the journal Nature about antiques and his own paintings that he used to decorate his genomics lab.
Prof. Noam Shomron, Edmond J. Safra member (Medicine), was interviewed in the journal Nature about antiques and his own paintings that he used to decorate his genomics lab.
Shomron's lab features nine life-sized paintings of animals, among other images. He also displays some pieces of antique scientific equipment, such as a Soviet Union-era manual centrifuge and salvaged microscopes from a bygone time. He selected every detail of the lab’s décor to create a welcoming environment for lab members.
Prof. Shomron says that the antique equipment reminds us that we have much to learn from yesterday’s scientists. "I want my students to stop and think about the proper way to conduct science rather than simply try to speed through experiments as fast as they can". The lab "must be a place of comfort — physically as well as mentally" he added.
