Research

Dr Jonathan Stern has broad interests in theoretical astrophysics, with particular emphasis on the physics of galaxy formation and evolution, accreting massive black holes known as active galactic nuclei and how they interact with their environment, and interstellar, circumgalactic, and intergalactic media. To understand these systems, he uses a multi-tier approach including ‘pen and paper’ analytic modelling, detailed microphysics and radiation-transfer calculations, large-scale numerical hydrodynamic simulations, and inference from / predictions for observational data.
