Abstract:

We revisit the quantum pigeonhole effect. We present a scenario that violates the classical pigeonhole principle in the quantum domain while adhering more faithfully to the original wording of the principle.

We analyze recent experiments that claim to demonstrate a quantum violation of pigeonhole principle and identify several shortcomings. To resolve some of these shortcomings, we propose a superconducting circuit demonstration of the paradox that could be implemented with transmon qubits. We also ground the analysis of the counterfactual reasoning of the paradox by analyzing the weak environmental footprints left by the quantum pigeons.
