Physics Colloquium

Abstract:

Astronomy is moving from a static description of the sky to a view of the cosmos as a dynamic, violently changing landscape. This approach, often called "Time Domain Astrophysics", is rapidly maturing. I will present new results from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a new wide-field survey that monitors the entire northern sky every 3 days. I will discuss some of the open physics questions these new data might shed light on, discuss specific examples, and provide a personal review of future prospects in time domain astrophysics.
